Issue #14

Welcome to the fourteenth edition of the University of Sheffield’s creative writing journal, Route 57. Each year, students, alumni and staff from the University of Sheffield bring you exceptional, experimental fiction, non-fiction, poetry and drama.

For 2018, Route 57 Issue 14 is published in two editions. In this digital issue, you will find our editors’ selections of the best creative writing produced in Sheffield this year.

The themed print edition of Issue 14 is entitled Loco-Motion, in collaboration with York’s National Railway Museum (NRM) as part of the Railway Cultures project. This special issue takes the culture shock of the railways, their histories, their present and future, as a jumping-off point from which to interrogate speed, transport, mobility, stasis and the politics of travel.

The contributions interpret the theme broadly, veering off down the branch lines of automotive, technological and bodily loco-motion, while stressing the way technology alters perceptions of space and time.

This hand-made book, made entirely in Sheffield, is designed by the book artist Abi Goodman (Sheffield Creative Guild) and printed on risograph by Choriso Press, Sheffield. All funds raised go straight back into making next year’s issue. You can buy the issue at bookshops and other locations around Sheffield.
